Galerie 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa 750ml

Sauvignon Blanc

Galerie's Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc surprised me--it's like a Pouilly Fumé from the Loire Valley; I have to admit that I am feeling a little smug about figuring out their angle before I read the reviews. To elaborate, myriad Cali Sauv Blancs climb into the $20s simply because they have been heavily oaked, processed through malolactic fermentation and picked at the peak of peaks: overripe. This one, however, is a harmonious marriage between the terroir-driven tradition and batonnage of the Old World (stirring of the lees, i.e. sediment), along with the neutral oak addition of the New World (oak does not typically touch Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc). Thus, don't let the $24.99 price tag turn you away: Most Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre is the same or more, sans oak.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast:

"Beautifully balanced and elegant, this is made by one of the winemakers at Cardinale and inspired by the Loire Valley. It offers equal parts fruit, weight and minerality, tasting of fresh-squeezed lime and wet stone, with a layering of viscous vanilla. Medium-sized in terms of texture, it dances on the palate, refreshing throughout."
